Neural networks are still not AI — and why they are everywhere
The words «artificial intelligence» are everywhere today, but behind most of them sit neural networks. And those are not the same thing. Let us unpack why a neural network is not yet AI, and how it still became part of everyday life.
What a neural network is
A neural network is a mathematical model that looks for patterns in data. It does not «understand» the world: it is very good at predicting the next element — a word, a pixel, an action — based on what it saw during training. It is a powerful statistical tool, not thinking.
Why it is still not AI
«Real» artificial intelligence usually means a system able to be aware, set goals and transfer experience from one domain to any other. Today neural networks cannot do that: they are brilliant at their task and helpless beyond it. They have no understanding, intentions or common sense — they have probability.
How they became part of life
- suggestions and autocorrect on the keyboard;
- face and voice recognition on the phone;
- recommendations in music, video and shops;
- translators, spam filters, navigation apps.
We use neural networks dozens of times a day, often without noticing. Their strength is the invisible automation of routine.
What this means for business
Neural networks deserve a sober view: they are a tool that solves specific tasks well — processing text, search, classification, generation. Value comes not from the word «AI» on a slide but from applying them sensibly to a real process. That is exactly the angle from which we approach the technology.
